Introduction

Buying on Ocula Auctions is an easy, secure and straightforward process. Ocula Auctions gives collectors tools to gather information and time to make an decision. High definition images, close up and zoom viewing, share and save tools, and social media integration gives Ocula Auctions an edge for prospective buyers and sellers. Many artworks offered can be viewed in our gallery prior to and during the auction.

Getting Started

All our auctions take place on the Ocula Auctions website. To buy and sell are required to register with us. Its free, easy and there are no obligations, why not do it now, just click here. Once registered you can participate in any of our auctions.

Artworks in an auction are called lots. In Grid view lots are displayed as thumbnail images and rolling over them with a cursor reveals the key details. In List view key information with the thumbnail image is viewable.

Clicking on a View Artwork button takes you to the Lot Detail page for an artwork. Here is information such as provenance, condition, comparable sales data and notes on the lot. Also there are high definition images of the artwork and a link to a Virtual Viewing.

Reporting tools: Add To Watchlist, which automatically emails any bidding on a lot, and: Add To Favourites, which saves and stores lots of interest and shares these with others, are found with every artwork.

More information is available by clicking on any of the relevant headings below.

Bidding

Once registered with Ocula Auctions you can bid on any artwork. When making a bid, enter it into the field to the left of the Place Bid button on a Lot Detail page. Ocula Auctions automatically ensures bids are made in increments relative to the value of the lot. If you choose to Auto Bid then Ocula Auctions will automatically bid on your behalf up to the maximum bid you choose to make on the lot.

The currency your bid in is automatically the currency you choose when you register. If you wish to change your currency go to your Profile in your My Account. When you click on the Place Bid button you will be taken to the Confirm Your Bid page. Here you have the opportunity to review the lot and any costs associated with purchase. You are encouraged to read the Ocula Terms and Conditions and the Returns and Refunds Policy.

To confirm your bid, which is final, click on the Confirm Bid button. A message will display to confirm it has been received by Ocula Auctions. You will also immediately receive an email to advise that your bid has been received and is leading or not as the case may be. This process is repeated each time that you bid unless you elect to use our Auto Bid feature described earlier.

When you have made a successful bid and win a lot you will be sent an invoice, which will detail your purchase. Payment is due within 5 days and full details about payment for your purchase can be found in the Payments section of Buying, or you can click here.

Add To Watchlist

Add To Watchlist is a feature available with every lot and is found by hovering over the thumbnail of a lot or in the right hand column on a Lot Detail page. Clicking on Add To Watchlist will store the lot in your My Account/Auctions/Watchlist. When you Add To Watchlist Ocula Auctions reports via email when bids are made so that you are informed of the status of the lot. You will also be alerted via email of the imminent closing of the auction.

Comparable Art Sales

Results from sales at auction houses in Australia and New Zealand are used in the Comparable Art Sales feature. This can be found on the Lot Detail page for most lots. These results, compiled by John Furphy, are provided through our partner Australian Art Sales Digest (AASD) and draw upon a database begun in 1969. Consequently the results are comprehensive and authoritative and increasingly include images of works sold which are displayed when available.

Buyers Premium

Ocula Auctions charges a successful bidder a Buyer's Premium. This is charged on the 'hammer price' of each lot sold in an online auction on Ocula Auctions. The Buyer's Premium is payable by the buyer as part of the total purchase price. The rate charged is as follows:

For lots located in New Zealand it is 15% of the hammer price.

For lots located in Australia it is 20% of the hammer price.

The Buyer's Premium is exclusive of G.S.T (Goods and Services Tax) as it is applied in the relevant country where the sale takes place.

GST or VAT

Goods and Services Tax (G.S.T) is payable on all services provided by Ocula Auctions including the Buyer's Premium however there are exceptions that pertain to the export of an artwork. Please consult our Terms and Conditions for further guidelines or contact Ocula Auctions: click here.

If a vendor is registered for G.S.T the invoice to the purchaser will provide a separate entry for G.S.T, which is included in the hammer price. Ocula Auctions will note on the Lot Detail page any lots to be sold with G.S.T. included in the hammer amount.
